Abengoa S.A. – Although it doesn’t attract as much attention as Archer-Daniels-Midland and other ethanol producers, Abengoa S.A.’s subsidiary, Abengoa Bioenergy in St. Louis, is the world’s second largest ethanol producer. Bioenergy is one of five operating units of this Spanish-based engineering and infrastructure concern, the others being: environmental services; industrial engineering and construction; information technologies; and solar. Not just a producer of ethanol, Abengoa also is a technology developer, with plans to build a next-generation cellulosic ethanol facility in the U.S. that will open in 2010. Abengoa is one of many companies in the process of developing a business model around the concept of sustainability. In addition to its solar unit, Abengoa’s environmental services unit recycles waste metals, while its information technology unit provides solutions for the energy industry.
